Rising Malawian Songwriter, Vocalist & Singer – “Shafi Phiri” professionally Known as “Driemo” who is signed to Vangongo Entertainment talks about how bumpy his journey has been since the inception into music industry. He sat with a Malawian Emerging Podcast named “Macnyoni” where he opened up on alot in a 1h+ video.
To Begin with, Driemo opens up about the wrestles of his early music career. Pointing out but a few, the most challenging part were his parents was against him being a musician because of their religion Background. He added, “I Did crazy stuffs just so I can record songs”
Furthermore, He shares a story about rebranding his name from being called “SP” to “Smart P” and now Driemo. Previous I used to do Dancehall music but I had to change into RnB because it’s easy to do and it doesn’t require much Energy”. Love can be expressed in different forms iam a love guy and that makes it easier for me to Express Emotions, Empathy and making it snappy through songs”.
In additional, For me promotion was an Issue because I had to forward my Music in WhatsApp groups with less than 1000 people and just getting about 5 people staying Big Ups. Surprising In a few months I started receiving strange messages from foreign numbers (Zambian Numbers) appreciating my music.
Later On General Kanene Posted about Me. It was really God’s work for my Music to Penetrate into Zambia Market such that Malawians started following my music.
In a nutshell, I stand my ground to differentiate between Driemo & Shafi Phiri, When I look back I feel emotional because of how my life has been and I don’t get moved by people who say I don’t look like an artist.
When asked if the song “Tebulo” was real he responded to say that was real life situation though the lady has been expressing interest to have something with him buts it’s late. I will not date someone in the name of Driemo rather I can as Shapi Phiri because Driemo is a business name.
He appreciated all the massive works his Management company is doing to make sure that he puts out international records.
