Zambia’s Kwacha Becomes World’s Best-Performing Currency (Read)

Zambia’s currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), and its value has been relatively strong recently under the economic reforms of President Hakainde Hichilema. As of January 14, 2026, the exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 19.72 ZMW.

President Hakainde Hichilema (nicknamed “Bally”) took office in August 2021. His administration has implemented fiscal discipline, improved debt management (including a G20 debt restructuring deal), and promoted economic reforms.
The Kwacha has been one of Africa’s best-performing currencies, with an appreciation attributed to increased investor confidence, robust copper earnings, and government policies encouraging the use of the local currency.
Inflation has also moved towards single digits, a significant improvement from the high rates seen before 2021.
The government is currently encouraging businesses to pass on the benefits of the stronger kwacha to consumers to help ease the cost of living.
